Part 6 — The Trinity
Understanding the Biblical Doctrine of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

One of the most misunderstood teachings of Christianity is the doctrine of the Trinity.
Many people, including many Muslims, have been taught that Christians believe in three gods or that the Trinity means God is the Father, the Son, and some other created being.
But that is not what historic biblical Christianity teaches.
The doctrine of the Trinity is not based on human philosophy.
It is based on what Scripture reveals about who God is.
The Bible teaches:
- There is only one God.
- The Father is God.
- The Son is God.
- The Holy Spirit is God.
- The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons.
This is the biblical doctrine of the Trinity.
There Is Only One God
The Bible is clear that God is one.
When Israel was commanded to worship God alone, Moses declared:
> “Hear, Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!” (Deuteronomy 6:4 NASB)
Isaiah records God’s own words:
> “I am the LORD, and there is no one else; Besides Me there is no God.” (Isaiah 45:5 NASB)
Christianity does not teach three gods.
The Bible does not teach three separate divine beings competing with each other.
There is one God.
The Father Is God
The Bible clearly reveals the Father as God.
Jesus prayed:
> “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3 NASB)
The Father is the source of creation, the sender of the Son, and the One whom Jesus came to reveal.
The Son Is God
The Bible also clearly teaches that Jesus Christ is God.
John wrote:
> “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1 NASB)
Then:
> “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” (John 1:14 NASB)
The eternal Word became Jesus Christ.
Paul wrote:
> “For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.” (Colossians 2:9 NASB)
Jesus is not a created prophet.
He is God revealed in human flesh.
The Holy Spirit Is God
The Holy Spirit is also revealed as divine.
When Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit, Peter said:
> “Why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit… You have not lied to men but to God.” (Acts 5:3–4 NASB)
To lie to the Holy Spirit was to lie to God.
The Holy Spirit is not merely an impersonal force.
- He speaks.
- He teaches.
- He guides.
- He can be grieved.
> “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” (Ephesians 4:30 NASB)
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Are Distinct Persons
The Bible does not confuse the Father, Son, and Spirit.
They are distinct.
At the baptism of Jesus we see all three revealed:
> “After He was baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and coming upon Him, and behold, a voice from the heavens said, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'” (Matthew 3:16–17 NASB)
Notice:
- The Son is baptized.
- The Spirit descends.
- The Father speaks.
- They are not the same Person.
- Yet they share the one divine nature.
The Trinity Is Not the Father, Son, and Holy Mother
A common misunderstanding among critics of Christianity is the claim that Christians worship a Trinity consisting of:
- The Father.
- The Son.
- The Holy Mother.
This is not the doctrine taught by Christianity.
The Bible never teaches that Mary is part of the Godhead.
Mary was a blessed servant of God who gave birth to Jesus according to His human nature.
The angel Gabriel said:
> “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; for that reason also the holy Child will be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:35 NASB)
Mary was not divine.
She was not the mother of God in the sense of creating or originating God’s existence.
The eternal Son existed before Mary.
Why This Matters When Comparing Christianity and Islam
The Qur’an rejects the idea that Allah has a son.
For example:
> “He neither begets nor is born.” (Qur’an 112:3)
From an Islamic perspective, the idea that God has a Son is considered impossible.
However, the biblical teaching of the Sonship of Christ is not about God physically producing offspring.
That is a misunderstanding.
The Bible teaches that the Son is eternally related to the Father and shares the divine nature.
Jesus is called the Son because of His unique relationship with the Father—not because God had a physical relationship with a woman.
The Sonship of Christ Is Essential to the Gospel
Why is this so important?
Because salvation depends on who Jesus is.
If Jesus is merely a prophet, He cannot save sinners.
If Jesus is only a teacher, He cannot defeat death.
If Jesus is only a created being, He cannot provide an infinite sacrifice for the sins of humanity.
But because Jesus is the eternal Son of God, His sacrifice has infinite value.
The Apostle John wrote:
> “The blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7 NASB)
The Father and the Son
The relationship between the Father and Son is central to Christianity.
Jesus said:
> “The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand. The one who believes in the Son has eternal life.” (John 3:35–36 NASB)
- The Father sent the Son.
- The Son revealed the Father.
- The Spirit applies the work of Christ to believers.
- This is the work of the one true God.
Why the Identity of God Matters
The question is not:
“Can human beings fully explain God?”
The answer is no.
God is infinite.
We are finite.
The question is:
“Has God revealed Himself?”
The Christian answer is yes.
He has revealed Himself through His Word and through His Son.
The Bible does not ask us to invent a God according to human understanding.
It calls us to believe the God who has revealed Himself.
Conclusion
The Trinity teaches:
One God.
Three Persons.
- Father.
- Son.
- Holy Spirit.
It does not teach:
Three gods.
A divine family of multiple gods.
The Father, Son, and Mary.
The biblical God is the Father who sent His eternal Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit who gives life to those who believe.
Jesus said:
> “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6 NASB)
The identity of God and the identity of Jesus Christ cannot be separated.
To know the Father, we must know the Son.
To receive eternal life, we must receive the Son.
> “Whoever has the Son has the life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have the life.” (1 John 5:12 NASB)
