In Ephesians 4:9-13, the apostle Paul unveils the divine blueprint for the five-fold ministry within the Church. Let's unpack the functions of each ministry and how they are designed to equip disciples for the work of ministry, both within the Church and out in the communities to reach the lost.

Making Effective Ministers Of The Gospel

In Ephesians 4:9-13, the apostle Paul unveils the divine blueprint for the five-fold ministry within the Church. Let’s unpack the functions of each ministry and how they are designed to equip disciples for the work of ministry, both within the Church and out in the communities to reach the lost.

Ephesians 4:9-13 (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.

1. Apostles Apostles are spiritual architects, tasked with laying foundations, planting churches, and providing overarching leadership. They are trailblazers, establishing new works and imparting vision to the Body of Christ. Their role extends beyond the walls of the church building, as they equip and empower disciples to go forth and establish God’s Kingdom in new territories.

2. Prophets Prophets are divine communicators, hearing God’s voice and sharing His heart with the Church. They bring revelation, correction, and encouragement, guiding believers into deeper intimacy with God. Through their ministry, disciples are equipped to discern spiritual atmospheres, engage in spiritual warfare, and effectively proclaim the Word of God to the world.

3. Evangelists Evangelists are soul-winners, passionate about sharing the Gospel and leading others to faith in Christ. While their primary function may seem outward-focused, their primary role within the Church is vital for equipping believers to effectively evangelise in their spheres of influence. They equip disciples with evangelistic tools, strategies, and boldness to boldly proclaim the Gospel and make disciples in their communities.

4. Pastors Pastors are spiritual shepherds, caring for the flock of God with love, compassion, and wisdom. They provide pastoral care, counselling, and discipleship, nurturing believers to maturity in Christ. While their ministry is primarily focused on the local church body, they equip disciples to extend pastoral care and support to those outside the church walls, demonstrating Christ’s love in practical ways.

5. Teachers Teachers are spiritual instructors, expounding upon God’s Word with clarity and depth. They equip believers with biblical knowledge, doctrine, and wisdom, empowering them to understand and apply the Scriptures in their daily lives. Through their teaching ministry, disciples are equipped to effectively disciple others, teaching them to observe all that Christ has commanded.

The Impact of Cessationism

Cessationism, the belief that certain spiritual gifts ceased with the apostolic age, has hindered the full operation of the five-fold ministry in the modern Church. Even among those who do not subscribe to Cessationism, there may be a reluctance to embrace the full expression of spiritual gifts and ministries. This scepticism or unbelief has contributed to a lack of unity of faith, knowledge of the Son of God, and maturity in Christ within the Body of Christ. The evidence that the five fold ministry is not functioning as it should within the Church today is blindingly obvious when we see how divided the body of Christ is today.

Restoring the Five-Fold Ministry

To restore the full operation of the five-fold ministry in the Church, believers must:

  1. Renew Their Understanding: Embrace a biblical understanding of the five-fold ministry and its role in equipping disciples for the work of ministry.
  2. Cultivate a Culture of Equipping: Prioritise discipleship, training, and mentoring to empower believers to operate in their spiritual giftings and callings.
  3. Embrace Spiritual Gifts: Recognise and celebrate the diversity of spiritual gifts and ministries, allowing the Holy Spirit to move freely within the Church.
  4. Pursue Unity and Maturity: Pursue unity of faith, knowledge of the Son of God, and maturity in Christ, recognising that the fullness of the Body of Christ can only be realised when all five-fold ministries are functioning effectively.

In conclusion, by embracing the divine purpose of the five-fold ministry and addressing the hindrances to its full operation, the Church can experience greater unity, maturity, and effectiveness in fulfilling its mandate to make disciples of all nations. Making Effective Ministers Of The Gospel
